The relationship between food and acne
Acne is a complex condition. Diet plays a role, but so does your lifestyle and genetics. There are certain foods that help cause acne and foods that help combat it. More research needs to be done on the link between diet and acne. Here’s what we know so far about what we know about how food causes acne.

cow’s milk
According to a study, drinking more milk increases the risk of acne. And skim milk is even worse. Researchers don’t know if this is due to the hormones in the milk of pregnant cows. High levels of these hormones are associated with a greater risk of acne.

Sugar and some carbohydrates
Some foods and beverages are high in sugar or their carbohydrates break down quickly and enter the bloodstream. Sugar, white rice, white bread and cakes are so-called high glycemic index foods that may worsen acne. Foods and beverages with a high glycemic index trigger the production of insulin to lower blood sugar. The hormonal cascade that follows ingestion of these foods increases oil production in the skin.

Chocolate is one of the foods that can cause acne, according to the results of several small studies. Cocoa is thought to be the main culprit, but one of these studies showed that people who ate chocolate with 10 times the amount of cocoa were no more prone to acne than those who ate chocolate with an average amount of cocoa. Choosing dark chocolate to manage acne may be a better choice because it has less milk and sugar.

High fiber food
Foods that fight acne include high fiber foods such as oatmeal, whole grain cereals, beans, carrots, and apples. No one knows why these acne-fighting foods are effective. It could be that fiber helps control blood sugar, which affects the levels of other hormones involved in acne.

When shopping for acne prevention foods, don’t forget to get some salmon. Salmon is rich in omega-3 fatty acids, which can reduce inflammation in the body. They may help suppress acne. Eating fish can also lower IGF-1, a protein that increases the risk of acne.

Acne is an inflammatory condition and many people with acne are low in antioxidants such as vitamin E and selenium. Nuts are rich in these compounds and can help you keep your skin clean. Almonds, Brazil nuts and peanuts are foods that may help clear up acne. Antioxidants help repair cells and help fight off infections. Be careful though. Nuts are high in fat and calories. A reasonable serving size is 3 to 4 Brazil nuts or about 24 almonds.

Zinc is antibacterial and may help kill certain types of bacteria that help with acne. Zinc inhibits the production of chemicals that promote inflammation, and inflammation is another process that occurs in acne. Too much zinc is unhealthy. Adults should be sure to consume no more than 40 mg of the mineral per day.

seaweeds
It’s a staple of Japanese cuisine and you can eat it with sushi, salads, or as a snack. Seaweed is rich in iodine, but it can trigger acne breakouts. The recommended daily allowance (RDA) of iodine for most adults is 150 mg per day. Women who are pregnant or breastfeeding need more. Iodine is found in seaweed, as well as in fish, iodized salt, and dairy products.

Do greasy foods cause acne?
Your mother told you to avoid fatty foods because they can give you acne. Not so. It’s a myth that fried foods cause acne. However, if you cook with a lot of oil, you may have more than a breakout. Oil from a deep fryer or pan can clog your pores while you’re cooking.

When to see a doctor
Dietary changes, home skin care and over-the-counter treatments are not always enough to keep acne under control. If they are, you may need to see a dermatologist to learn more about your skin condition. Medical treatments may help you control your acne and reduce the risk of scarring.
